Women’s underwear: The tool of torturers and sadists |
|
I’m really beginning to hate underwear! As I’ve gotten older, my body seems to be saying, ‘‘Please, let’s just wear a muumuu with nothing underneath.’’ I have searched far and wide for underpants that don’t ride up or grab me and hold on like a vise.

Laughter can be a way of life if you’re aware |
Every time I do a seminar, people ask me how I got to be so funny and how they could see more humor in their own lives. The answer is a little complicated.

Sometimes it’s too soon old and too late smart |
I spent the last three days at the AARP convention in Boston. I remember my mother getting AARP information in the mail. I used to think: ‘‘I’m never going to join that!’’ After all, I was a 30-something married mother of three who was going to stay young forever and not have one problem. Wrong on both counts.

Losing stuff can prompt irrational questions, answers |
I would love to do a study on how many hours we spend looking for things that we lose in our homes. I’m beginning to think it’s at least half of our lives. Not a day goes by without me looking for my glasses. It used to be my car keys, too, but somehow I became vigilant about simply leaving them in the car. Suddenly, they are always there! The glasses are another issue. I use reading glasses and sometimes I also need distance glasses. The last time I got a new prescription I thought I would resolve the problem by buying a couple of pairs of each. I couldn’t conceive of misplacing all of them. But, hey, what do I know? On any given day, you guessed it, they all disappear. They seem to have a life of their own.

Instead of being fed up, try seeing the good |
How many times a day do you think you discuss or think about negative issues in your life or someone else’s life?
I have often suggested to my clients that they tape their conversations for one day to observe how much energy they expend making themselves and others crazed and humorless.

Rather than whine, be grateful for what you have |
I just came back from an early morning walk and I feel totally exhilarated by the smell of fresh air, the crystal-blue sky and the warmth of the sun. It sounds like the beginning of a romance novel except Fabio was not walking beside me, whispering in my ear.

A pat on the back to contractors you can count on |
About 20 years ago, my oldest son, Jon, decided to go into business for himself. He called me and asked me what he should put on his truck in addition to his name and phone number. Without hesitation, I told him to make his logo: ‘‘I show up.’’

You never know, so act on your fondest dreams today |
My career has taken me to many wonderful places and today I am lucky to be going to, of all places, Monte Carlo. This is a very special trip because I am going with my daughter, who is in remission from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. When she was diagnosed, we made a pact to make sure we did not just talk about what we wanted to do, but that we would do it.
