Save some of your love for people, not things |

Our culture is permeated with the word love.
Celebrities set the tone for excessive kissy face and multiple ‘‘love you, love
you’’ every time they see one of their own, even though they might have trashed
them in an interview. Commercials show people fondly caressing their iPods and
cell phones while they ooze words of love.

Admitting that you’re aging is 1st step toward aging well |
September is Healthy Aging Month. It is also the month in which I
was born and, thankfully, I’m continuing to age. I often feel
conflicted about aging, though. I didn’t when I was younger because
aging was as foreign to me as being part of a group of traveling
gypsies.

Lamenting our lost sense of community |
A couple of weeks ago I went to New York and met my daughter for a
weekend of rest and relaxation. While I was there, I decided to do
something I’ve thought about for a very long time. I went to Brooklyn
to visit the house in which I was born and lived for the first eight
years of my life.

Families’ despotic rulers wreak their own sort of havoc |
Last week, I watched a news segment about the military prowess of
North Korea. It showed hundreds of soldiers marching in perfect
formation and tanks with missiles pointing skyward. And there, in the
midst of the grandiose spectacle, was ‘‘his poufiness,’’ President Kim
Jong Il.
