Today nearly everyone has an opinion on how everything could be made better. Thanks to our 24 x 7 news media, some of those opinions are even moderately well-informed. We have thoughts on how to improve the government, reduce global warming, and end the war in Iraq. Closer to home, many people I know have thoughts and ideas a plenty on how to improve zoning, manage the town budget or handle local homelessness. What I always wonder is: What does everyone do with all these wonderful ideas? If everyone acted on all the great insights they had, surely we’d be making more progress than we are. Everybody occasionally plays “armchair quarterback.” Hey, we’re only human and it can be enjoyable to play ‘what if’ and theorize about how things would be better if only “the people in power” thought as clearly as we do. The kick is – we have way more power than we think -- but we don’t always use it. If we put our thoughts into action, even in a small way, we could really influence how things around us turn out. I am always impressed and amazed when I read about the impact of letter-writing, grass-roots charitable campaigns, and the incredible possibility of individual accomplishments when one person is compelled to make a positive change in the world. At this time of year, when we’re filled with self-contemplation and the thoughts of New Year’s resolutions; I invite you to listen to yourself and to hear the ideas you put forth and the causes that concern you. You don’t have to tackle world hunger, but think about what you might actually do to act upon your thoughts. Whether it’s a donation, volunteering some time, writing a letter to the editor, joining an organization or rallying some friends in support – I invite you to transform your words and thoughts into actions. I bet you’ll be glad you did! They say the road to hell is paved with good intentions. I wonder where the road with good intentions and actions goes? I bet it takes us somewhere wonderful. Let’s find out together. Comments (7)

I recently attended a Stress seminar at Hugley Hospital in Burleson, Tx. They showed your tapes several times. You were so humerous, I rushed out to buy some of the tapes and CD's so could share with my other 70???? yr old friends. I plan to have a party showing the tapes and we can have a great time enjoying your humor. Yes, you do have a Brooklyn accenet. I really enjoyed your comments and am sure my friends will also. 2/6/08. rac
When I heard on the News from Germany they are thinking of selling "futures in Water" like "oil futures" I set my mind to worry! Then a thought came to me, if the ocean is rising, like they claim it is, lets reclaim the water for use on land. There is such a thing as a "desalinization" so maybe the ocean won't rise because we'll be taking the water out for countries who are now too dry to grow food. The news from dewelle.tv and linktv.org puts a different slant on things, check 'em out :) How to power the desalinization plants? Here's an idea: In San Francisco [I read] they are doing curb side pick up of dog poop to make methane for running machinery. Another source of power is Geo-thermal. Iceland is using it for up to 70 % of it's power needs & we can too! More good news: India's Tata Motors sells a new car called a "Nano" for $2,500 U.S.! {it was even less but our stupid Federal reserve Chairman keeps watering down the dollar.
Lynn, I agree with you but I don't have the answer. I live in Northern California in a city famous for it's protests. In this city, if I tried to "take it to the streets" like in the old days, I"d find myself behind bars and it wouldn't make the news. Did you watch the protests in Tiananmen square? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiananmen_Square_protests_of_1989 Seeing grandparents, parents and children shoulder to shoulder brought tears to my eyes. I remember the 60's, I was in it. Had we the support of our parents and grandparents I wonder if we could have been successful? Loretta, God Bless YOU! You made a hell of a difference to me! I'm a fun nut and you validate me! when someone doesn't get the joke, I refer them to you! "get a laugh, drop some change" How is your daughter? If you are ever in the S.F. Bay area, let me take you to Chez Panisse! eating Can be orgasmic!
As much as the computer as changed our lives forever for the better, I think it's effect has also been detrimental in that we sit behind our desk and just write protests instead of getting out in the streets the way we did in the 60's and 70's. The only protesters one hears about these days are by ILLEGAL immigrants DEMANDING their rights here in America. We do petition signings and letter-writings and I don't believe that's nearly as effective as a million or more of us in front of the White House protesting this grotesque war. There is no media coverage of a milllion letters to our Congress, but there surely would be if we were a million strong, live, breathing, angry citizens. But how do we start that again? I don't know the answer because it's so much easier to sit at home and try to effect change.
I love to think that my life is making a difference in a positive way. I think we don't realize that taking action could be as simple as making sure your children have manners. If we all said "please " and "thank you" more often it would make world peace a much more viable option. My friend Joan Borysenko has often said that saying "thank you" is the greatest prayer we can utter. So thank you to one and all for tuning into this blog. Loretta
Indeed it is so empowering to take action, to get up from the arm chair, brush off the cobwebs of our inactivity and..ACT!I think the 24/7 media coverage can leave us feeling overwhelmed and thinking that our efforts won't make a difference. However, it is those small acts that change the course of the world, small acts of faith and kindness. I know that when I volunteer at my local animal shelter, write articles for advocacy groups etc, I feel a sense of worth, empowerment, and a force for positive change. We are all connected. Casting a small stone of loving action into the sea of our existence manifests a fabulous eternal ripple effect.
We do have way more power than we think. 'They' don't want us to figure this out. I'm pretty good at letter-writing but do become discouraged and negligent at times. Sorta feel that way just now and need to shake it off and let 'em know what I think.
